TRAD23

At the end of January 2023, the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) published a Prior Information Notice announcing a forthcoming call for tenders for TRAD23.

What is TRAD23?

TRAD23 is a contract for translation services from or into English (EN) and from or into French (FR) in combination with another EU official languages. There are 50 language combinations and TRAD23 will cover more than 1m pages per year. The volume could easily triple, since TRAD23 will last from March 1, 2024 – February 28, 2026.

The official contract notice has been released on March 1, 2023, and after the release, there have been information sessions held in almost every EU capital city. On April 20, 2023, there will be an information session in Bratislava. You can find more information about the sessions here.

Language pairs

Tens of thousands of pages per year will be translated from English into other EU languages, while English to Greek translation is expected to be the most translated (65,000 pages). Much less work is expected for translation into English, from a maximum 7,000 pages for Spanish – English to just 1,000 per year for English translation from, for example, Latvian, Slovenian and Swedish.

It is estimated that a translation into French from German or Italian will be around 3000 pages, while into Spanish it will be around 2000 pages. French is the source language for other non-English language pairs, and targets include Dutch (2,000 pages), Danish, German and Italian (1,000 pages each).
