On 14.2. 2022 our translation company ASAP-translation.com completed training for the Department of English and American Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of St. Cyril and Methodius in Trnava in the field of using the Multiterm program.
The training took place within the project Professional Communication and Terminological Literacy in Foreign Language Education in Secondary Vocational Education, which aimed to identify the needs of students and teachers to supplement bilingual materials for teaching, especially vocational subjects in secondary schools. The main goal of the project was to develop a terminological manual, the content of which should be professional texts, especially in the field of natural sciences as a basis for professional science training. During the training at the university, we talked about the basic concepts related to the management of terminology, where we explained the main differences between the dictionary, glossary or terminology database (TB). The terminology database was the key term that captures the essence of the Multiterm application. As part of the training, we clarified the possibilities of creating such a database, which explained all the ways, from importing existing terminology into TB, to pre-prepared terminology from the source text. Thanks to the use of TB, we are able to maintain terminological consistency and especially to translate the translated text correctly. Thanks to the terminological database, we can also simplify the translation from Slovak into English or the translation from English into Slovak within the framework of creating a printed or electronic glossary or dictionary.
During the training, we also mentioned the basic differences between the Trados Studio application and the Multiterm application. The Multiterm application was the main topic of the entire training. We have clarified all the versions available in the application, which has greatly simplified the entire course of the project for the university. Thanks to the Multiterm application, it will be possible to create a bilingual Slovak-English and English-Slovak translation dictionary of scientific terminology, which will contain approximately 300 terms with Slovak as well as English definitions or equivalents. The final output of this project will be suitable as a study tool for secondary vocational schools with a focus on science, but it can also be used by primary school teachers and students, especially those where they apply the methodology of integrated foreign language teaching.
